All these problems which seem to prevent folks from doing something are just
excuses really. Deep self-enquiry usually reveals the real fear.
I've heard this income excuse many times from midwives in response to the
independent practice scenario.
Yet IPM's are successfully raising families, practising independently and
enjoying a fulfilling life. If you don't value yourself enought to charge
enough to survive on, you have a problem with your own self-esteem. Midwives
I know charge $2000 per client and take a maximum 4 clients per month. Good
midwives have to knock potential clients back because their services are in
demand.
>From experience of talking to midwives, I think you know in your heart if
this self-regulated style of working is for you or not. The income, while a
consideration, is not usually the main issue in the end.

Thanks for your relpy to this discussion. Not meant to be critical of you,
just part of the overall discussion. Having workin as a midwife in the
system for 10 years I am very much aware of the commitment problems you
face.

Precisely, here-in the problem, you cannot be everything to everyone, so
priorities in yours/our lives are important. But what happens to the women
who need our continuous consistent non-fragmented care and advice, our
advocacy, our support and our strength?
We need to change the shift work phenomena and personalise care between
women and midwives, then we can work with our families and provide and
excellent service to/for the women who choose our care.
I understand many need a regular wage, but that criterea does not prevent
strong midwife practitioners evolving in the system. We are all midwife
practitioners regardless of where we practice.
