I reckon at this short notice it is suffice to say the HMA etc wants money
to this this and this or that! I didn't and think I should have. My gut
feeling is that waiting for Medicare rebates for midwives will take longer
than for Johnny Howard to say sorry. I'm pretty sure that the good Senator
was pushing me (AKA all of us) to say that we want separate funding for
midwife managed services. That's probably enough at the moment. The person
who gave evidence before the ACMI was a bureaucrat from the health
department (and a very cluey one at that). They kept pushing her to tell
them how to best to negotiate with the HDepts to fund these alternatives ( I
do hate that word). Tracy Reibel et al from the Community Midwives project
in Fremantle has done really good things in this regard. They are 'playing
the game really well' and are on the way to 'purchasing' services ie births
from the Department.
