Dear list, I joined the list a couple of days ago and have been swamped with the discussion you are having. I'd like to join in and please forgive me if I repeat something because I really don't have time to read all the posts. I am Canadian. I'm just starting my 4 year bachelors program in midwifery in Hamilton, Ontario. In my first year, we spend a lot of time talking about history and political situation of midwifery in Ontario and how it relates to other midwifery models in other countries. I am very interested in your struggles to provide the kind of care you believe Australian midwives should be able to provide. I'd like to give you encouragement and possibly some information about how it is in Ontario, if that will help you at all. I was in Australia (Sydney) last summer working with Professor Marie Chamberlain who is Professor of Midwifery at the University of Sydney. I went for a field trip to Walgett, NSW and spoke to the midwives in the community and hospital there. This explains my interest in Australian midwifery and so I know a little about your situation. I notice some of you refer to NZ and Canadian midwifery as models so if it is all right with you, I'd like to expand on those references as they come up with the information I am getting through my courses. Sincerely, Sheryl Cronk Midwifery student, Midwifery Education Programme McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics.
