Health and Welfare director Warwick Con claims the
ratio of nurses to patients in Australias
hospitals has declined over the past decade, with
figures indicating there are 197,000 nurses across
Australia while the general population has
increased by 11 per cent. Con also highlights the
fact that patient numbers have increased but there
has been a decline in the length of their hospital
stay, a reduction in the number of full-time
nurses and an increase in number of nurses working

                       Medical Association president David Brand
yesterday called for the regulation of the
                       alternative medicine industry through the
                       Australian Competition and Consumer Commission,
with fears over misdiagnosis of health problems by
                       alternative health practitioners. Qld Naturopathic
Association spokesperson Tracey Sypel has rejected
any further regulation of the alternative health
industry, claiming that there is simply
                       insufficient public knowledge about naturopathy
and its regulation. Sypel claims that reports of
unusual treatment are not a common occurrence in
naturopathy, and that practitioners must achieve a
                       high level of qualification. (Dur:09:55)
