Dear subscribers,

I need your assistance! Does anyone know the reference to a World health
organisation report which was published in the mid to late 1990s that
compares perinatal morbidity and mortality data and intervention rates in
OECD countries? The report found i believe that the countries (including
netherlands, Sweden and new zealand) with the best outcomes for mothers and
babies also have the lowest obstetric intervention rates. It also
apparently found that around 85% of women in those countries are capable of
normal birth and that obstetric interventions should be kept to 15% or less.

A reference to this report, and any web address or advice on where it can be
located would be very helpful. If so, i'd be grateful for the reference to
be sent to me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

by way of background, I am a newcomer to the ozmid list, having heard much
about it. i have refrained from joining for some time since I thought i
would not be able to keep up with the volume of debate and discussion. but
the recent news that independent midwives are being denied the opportunity
to renew their insurance policies has driven me to action.

I am a 'consumer' having recently had my second baby with a (brilliant)
independent midwife in Canberra. I am also an active member of a consumer
oragnization - Maternity coalition. I passionately believe that midwifery
care is the best model of care for normal pregnancy and that we need to
promote this model of care to as many women as possible.

Maternity coalition is keen to promote women't right to choose a midwife as
her primary caregiver. With a federal election pending the time to be
promoting this cause is now.

To support the midwifery campaign it would be very helpful to have
authoritative statistics on australian intevention rates compared to other
OECD countries.

Thanks in advance...
