Subject: Natural birth problems after a Caesarean

Hi Bridgette,

I noticed that Radio National will be airing a segment titled Natural birth
problems after a Caesarean on Monday, 23rd July, 2001. I would like to
inform you of the presence of many consumer advocacy groups around Australia
that support informed birth choices for women who experienced caesarean
birth during a previous birth experience.

The organization of which I am Convenor, Birthrites: Healing After Caesarean
Inc, is one example of a nationwide group that endeavours to provide women
who have experienced caesarean birth with support and information about
their future birth choices.

To increase awareness, of the general public as well as childbirth
professionals, we celebrate the inaugural National Caesarean Awareness Day
(NCAD) on September 11th, this year. Almost every state has activities
happening on the day, and there are currently 2 conferences organised one
in Perth titled Caesarean Birth: Myths and Realities and one in South
Australia (organised by the group, CARES-SA, that initiated the NCAD). To
find out more about the day, and activities, please visit the Birthrites
website at http://www.birthrites.org , or the CARE-SA websites at
http://homepages.picknowl.com.au/caressa

Our organization is available for comment, re caesarean birth and natural
birth after caesarean, any time that consumer comment is sought. Do not
hesitate to contact us in seeking this, now or in the future, as what
consumers want/need during childbirth, especially after a previous birth
experience that may have been considered traumatic, should be included as
valuable information in all discussions surrounding caesarean birth.

Our philosophy is - "With knowledge we can make choices that lead to
empowerment, and healing, through birth."

We aim to provide contact with an empathetic person, by phone or email, as
local as possible to the women who are seeking advice or support. This local
support often encourages 'get-togethers' which allow women to come together
and share wisdom and support.

We aim to increase the awareness of of birth choices after a c/section(s),
to both women and their carers, and the pros and cons involved with each
choice.

We aim to increase awareness of the rising caesarean rate, worldwide, and
the safety of VBAC (depending on each individual's personal situation).

We encourage a return of empowerment to birth, especially important to women
who have experienced a traumatic birth experience previously. We are
pro-VBAC, but what we really encourage is EBAC - Empowered Birth After
Caesarean, removing the focus on vaginal birth after caesarean and thereby
placing the ability to be involved in all decision-making surrounding future
births back with the mother - whether that future birth is a VBAC or a
c/section. To find out more, you need to visit our website... Welcome.

Birthing Beautifully,
Jackie Mawson.

Too many Gods;
   so many creeds,
   Too many paths
    that wind and
        wind,
   When just the art
    of being kind
    Is all the sad
     world needs...
