Hi Jackie,
I couldn't agree more. That wasn't the intended strategy. My rationale for
suggesting a rally outside of his office was to bring an awareness to the PI
issues not to specifically protest about his comments and certainly not to
endeavour to win him over. Like you, I think that is wasted energy as he is a
lost cause!!!
The point is that the Senator has chosen to enter into a dialogue on this
issue and any dialogue is better that none at all. My understanding is that
the Community Midwifery Program in WA is potentially under threat of folding
if the PI issue cannot be resolved soon. Using Senator Eggleston's profile as
a current sitting Liberal Member of parliament who resides in Perth, I
thought provided a convenient platform in which to launch a campaign of
awareness of the PI issue and its potential implications for the CMP and to
further use his comments during this campaign to highlight the problems
midwives are facing in accessing support. Given its an election year, I
thought it wouldn't look too good for him to have many pregnant women,
midwives and babes at the breast, rallying outside of his office in protest
of the Government's inaction to find a solution to this problem. Its all
about creating a scene to focus the spotlight on the issues - not the man.
Good politicking I would have thought!!
