Surely you can't compare midwifery with nursing when it comes to ratios?
Why is the ANF telling midwives how to deliver care to pregnant women
 and new mothers?

Hi Jan and all,

this thread has brought back for me a discussion we all had some time ago
(nearly 12 months to the day according to the ozmid archives) on the ANF and
their inability to represent midwifery. Interesting isn't it ??

On the 03/08/2000 I wrote,

"...........The ANF at the end of the day is a union, a powerful union yes,
but is
membership really required for midwives, particularly when the union does not
support the notion that midwifery is a discrete profession from nursing and
does not support the reeduacation of the profession for the benefit of "the
public" as it so loudly says it advocates for???

I acknowledge and respect the work the ANF has done as an industrial body
onbehalf of the nursing profession, but refute the notion that it represents
the interests of the midwifery profession, midwives and above all and
ultimately the interests of women!!!!

The ACMI is currently exploring the possibilites and options for its member's
RE: professional indemnity insurance - perhaps if midwives were to withdraw
their membership in protest from the ANF, it may be just the catalyst needed
for ACMI to action something quick smart!!!!!

Further to this Anne, the ANF is not the only body able to provide
professional indemnity insurance cover. Many insurance companies can provide
this and more for health professionals. The arguement that I here from most
midwives is the the primary benefit they recieve as ANF member's is that
through this membership they get professional indemnity insurance of about
$5m.

Big deal!!!!!

I get that on my public liability insurance with my home and contents
insurance and I don't have to misrepresent myself to get that!!!!!!!

Sorry for sounding gruff, but I feel that is a really weak arguement for
sticking with something purely beacause you've always done it that way!!

I would urge most midwives to 'look outside the square they live in' and hunt
around for someone else for their insurance, if thats all they want from the
ANF.
OK, it may cost them a little more in dollars, but I honestly believe it will
cost them more in the long run in terms of their profession!!!!!! "

I was almost 'tarred and feathered and burnt at the stake' for these comments
a year ago. Oh if we only had a crystal ball or could travel trough time and
take a peak at the future. Not only do we have today the ANF still screwing
midwifery, but now NO %$#@#$% insurance either!!!!!

This is my two bobs worth!!!
