We are inviting applications for this key research leadership post in midwifery. The aim of this prestigious joint initiative is to develop the capacity of midwifery research in Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital (GSTH), in partnership with the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Academic Department of Obstetrics in GKT School of Medicine at King’s College, University of London. All partners have a record of research excellence, and a commitment to woman-centred multi-disciplinary research. This initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen links between Schools and the Trust with a clear strategic direction from the Trust and the university to form clinical/academic partnerships wherever possible to ensure both clinical coherence and scientific excellence.

 Guys’ and St. Thomas’ Hospitals (GSTH) is the largest maternity unit in the London region with 5800 births a year. The new Women’s Health Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital is due to open in Spring 2002 and will contain a midwife-led birth centre and a birth centre for women requiring complex care, all women will be cared for by  midwifery group practices in the community. Joining this new venture, you will be expected to establish and lead new programmes of externally funded work in collaboration with clinical practitioners and inter-disciplinary research groups in the Trust and university. You will bring your own interests to the post fitting within our overall research strategy which is responsive to the needs of local women and the NHS and you will have access to a small fund to pump prime pilot projects. You will be highly motivated and have a PhD in a relevant field or equivalent extensive research expertise at a senior level, a track record of high quality research output and experience of working with practitioners. Current registration as a midwife is desirable but not essential.

 The postholder will be based mainly at St Thomas’ Hospital with an academic base in the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, Waterloo Campus. The post is funded by the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charitable Foundation and is for five years in the first instance. Salary within the Senior Research Fellow Grade III point 20 �33,820 to point 27 �41,319 exclusive of London Weighting subject to experience and expertise.
