Great idea Pete. If the midwives could take on all of the healthy women as caseload (perhaps the GP could see them once so they would be known if complications occured) it would free up lots of GP time so they could concentrate on practising medicine and being more accessable when accidents and emergencies occured. Would benefit all concerned. GPs free to practice medicine, midwives available to follow women through and refer those who need it and a really cost-effective maternity program that women would appreciate.
