Dear All,
I am seeking midwives to participate in a research project (funded by The
Australian Research Council) which explores communication between midwives
and parents after the birth of a child with a genetic condition. The
project grew out of previous research which was investigating women's
ethical decision-making regarding prenatal genetic diagnosis; what became
clear was that midwives had a large role to play in women's adjustment to
unwelcome news of their babies' genetic conditions. I guess that is not in
itself big news! But, what remained unclear was what constituted "good"
communications and what characterised less positive communications. This
project seeks to contribute to that clarification.
I have completed the data collection from parents, and am now embarking on
recruiting midwives so that a complete picture can be obtained. I am
seeking midwives who would be willing to participate in an interview
detailing their experiences and insights into this area. I can undertake
in-person interviews in Victoria; and phone interviews elsewhere in
Australia.

a picture of this important time is obtained, and, of course, that depends
upon including midwives in the project.
