I was also taught to "do" VEs right handed even though I am left handed. I
was also taught to stand on the right side of the bed for abdominal
examinations. Now I am comfortable either way. That may have something to do
with the fact that my mother and father were
ambidextrous, and it may have something to do with the fact that I had no
right side of the bed to stand on once I moved into home midwifery practice.
Floor, couch, tub all come into the equation when feeling bellies at home. I
have also found it easier if I shut my eyes so that I am seeing with my
fingers - then it doesn't matter where you are standing or have positioned
yourself. Works for me!

Please open more of these cans of worms......

Interesting. I was allowed to learn VE left handed, and I've always done
them that way. But I still palpate from the right, and I get confused if I
don't. I don't care which side I'm on during birth
