>From my reading (I think The Age, in Melbourne) they used the military to
determine levels of left- and right-handedness and compared this over the
years.

Whether or not prenatal ultrasound causes an increase in left-handedness,
there are SO many unanswered questions about ultrasound use that I am
constantly astounded by the rates at which it is employed.

Some years back I did a project looking at women's experiences of routine
prenatal ultrasound and the findings were not the cosy "bonding" images that
seem to be so prevalent - inaccuracy, wrongful diagnoses leading to more
invasive testing, disempowering women (esp. when the one thing they were
certain of in their pregnancy were their 'dates' which were dismissed in
favour of the inexact ultrasound prediction) etc. Of particular concern is
the lack of knowledge women have about why they are undergoing an ultrasound
in the first place. The lack of discussion prevents women from considering
whether they want to know genetic conditions, for example, until they are
already along the genetic testing path.

I won't get on my soap box (!) but even over and above the unanswered
questions of safety, questions of efficacy remain doubtful, and women's
experiences of prenatal ultrasound is sometimes far from the cosy photo
opportunity and "bonding" moment that women expect from the word-of-mouth
and media protrayal of the technology.

cheers,
Ali
