I am scrutinizing first proofs of the above book, which is due for publication in April, and I have a very simple question which I am sure you can answer. Do doctors and midwives still slap babies on the bottom when they are born to get them breathing? I have assumed so, in writing the chapter on the rituals surrounding the birth of a child, but it occurs to me that this old-fashioned practice might be obsolete.
