Subject: National Maternity Action Plan - comments sought
Dear Ozmid List,
After many months of hard work, I am pleased to say that the draft National Maternity Action Plan is now available for public review and comment.
Please find a copy at
www.communitymidwifery.iinet.net.au/nmap.html
The Plan has been drafted by a handful of dedicated people from a range of organisations who collectively have many years of experience with maternity services and considerable expertise.
It is inspired by a vision in which every pregnant woman can have the choice of her own midwife to provide primary, continuous care throughout her pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, regardless of where she resides, where she chooses to give birth and her ability to pay for such care.
It is inspired by a conviction that women should have the right to access world-best practice, and evidence-based care for their pregnancy and birth, and that midwives are experts in normal, healthy pregnancies and births experienced by the vast majority of women.
It is inspired by the desire to unite our voices in demanding change from our Governments for the benefit of women, their partners and their babies.
The Plan provides a blueprint for how Governments can deliver maternity services that offers midwifery-led care as a standard option through the public health system. In so doing, maternity services will become more cost-effective, more consistent with the latest scientific research and more responsive to the needs of women and their families.
In particular we are keen to have comments on the strategic direction and solutions outlined in the Plan. It is our hope that comments and support for the Plan will be forthcoming from as many consumer and midwifery organisations as possible from every part of Australia. So please take this opportunity to have your say!
Once comments have been received on the Plan, it will be presented to a wider audience of experts and professionals in each State and Territory to seek their endorsement.
The final revised document will be launched in every State and Territory by June 2002.
Please forward this email to anyone you believe may be interested in reviewing and providing constructive comment on the draft Plan.
We look forward to hearing from you. Please follow the instructions on the website to make comments.
yours in better birthing,
Dr Barbara Vernon
on behalf of the NMAP drafting committee.
