To all experienced midwives - I need some advice about my
career.
I recently graduated as a midwife from a WA uni. Having worked
as an RN for many years, in the critical care fields (ICU,CCU, & ED), I
landed a great job in a south coast town. The job involves working in the small
ED Mon - Fri and being "on - call" for general and midwifery. The birth rate is
about 30/year and the hospital has a homebirth service operating from it (govt
funded). My post - grad experience ( 5 months) to date has included: 4
beautiful "normal, natural" births, one being a waterbirth; I have attended a
homebirth as a back up 2nd midwife with a very experienced homebirth midwife,
and have witnessed another very "normal" birth, plus conducted antenatal care,
post natal care and home visits. All of this is on a very small scale - the
numbers being few, but the quality of care just wonderful.
I have a family (2 daughters 9 & 6, and a
hubby), who were quite prepared to try out the country life, but unfortunately
both girls are terribly homesick and missing their old school and
friends.
This is the dilemma - go back to the city and work in a busier
birthing environment or stay here and "stand in line" for the next birth, as
there are about 6 midwives all wanting births.
My ultimate goal is to work as a community midwife and I need
2 years experience to qualify for the WA program.
I realise it is my decision but I
want to get the best exposure to "normal" birthing, and have a happy
family.
