Is all that we
do useless? When do we get to see change?
Macha,
I too have days when I feel like saying 'well up ya
b*m!!' and tossing the whole lot in...they seem to coincide with reading
articles like She mag funnily enough.
As a great many wise women (many from this list)
have said to me, remain strong and have faith in what you believe in. Try
not to change the world, just keep along the thoughts that changing it for one
person is the best result. I don't mean that to change one person is the
best we can achieve; but to change one person is in fact the best, one drop can
cause a flood type thing.
On a practical note, perhaps we should see if there
is a body that monitors journalism and see if we can make a complaint about
articles which promote the wrong message and so on? You know like the body
who monitors advertising FACTS I think they are called (FARB is radio) so if
there is a body who oversees radio and tv then there has to be one who oversees
print. We could bring it to their attention that the quality of
information is not responsible?
I will ask my hubby who works in radio if he knows
the channels we could use..get back to you.
Stay positive Macha!!! I love reading your
postings! Knowing there are people like you in this world gives me the
strength to stay in the game. Thank you.
Back again: just spoke to the Australian Press
Council and their advice is such: Is the article being written in the context of
"if you have tried bf and it didn't work then this is how to bottle feed" type
thing or is it blatantly saying breast feeding is not the way to go. Now
if they have stated somewhere in the article that breast is best then we don't
have a leg to stand on. But if the whole article is promoting bottle over
breast, then the official procedure is - write to SHE mag and state all the
reasons the article is wrong and misinforming (goes against WHO and official gov
policy to promote bf)etc. If they don't publish it in their letters page
or there are no other letters of similar type to yours, then you can contact the
APC (they are one the web www.presscouncil.org.au and they have
a complaints form. You fill that out, attach our complaint letter
and the article and send it all in.
Basically they are a toothless tiger I think but
they can kind of make mags like that curb their sensationalist journalism down a
bit.
Good luck sweetness.
