I can only speak from personal experience here but I breastfed my first for 6 months (he weaned himself) and my period did not return until 8.5 months.
With my second I breastfed for 8 months and my period returned after 5 months.
I haven't spoken to any of my friends about it so can't offer any other anecdotal info.
