Good luck - it's an interesting question. Also look at the NHMRC documents as they recommend that midwives need to have the authority to prescribe & order routine path. & radiology. This is the difference between where we are now and where we need to get to & it's what authorised NPs can do. Otherwise we do not have true autonomy.

Subject: Nurse Practitioner Project

Hello everyone,
I'm after some midwife's thoughts on the Nurse Practitioner Projects.  Do you believe that midwives are already advanced practitioners, and do they have a place in these projects??  I need to write an assignment on how midwives feel about this issue - both those who agree with it and those who oppose it.  I believe that the ACMI (SA Branch) has pulled out of the Project in SA, and wonder how credentialing will be achieved without their support.

I'd love to hear your views, and any references would be greatly appreciated.

In anticipation
Lisa Frahm

Dear Lisa

It is confusing to the public to include midwives within a Nurse Practitioner Project and call them nurse practitioners.

I believe all credentialling of midwives should be through the Professional organisation for midwives and
that is the Australian College of Midwives (Inc). The College Accreditation process is currently being reviewed and will soon be able to offer credentialling for both IPMs and those midwives employed as clinicians in other settings who meet the College criteria.

The College would then be able to forward a list of credentialled midwives i.e. Midwife Practitioners to each state Dept. of Health so that the Australian public becomes more aware of Midwife Practitioners and the services they provide.

I believe new graduate midwives should work towards credentialling by demonstrating their committmenet to women through taking on their own caseload. There is no longer a place for sub-standard fragamented care within maternity services ... Best practise is what we should all be aiming for. We must support the women who are trying to support us by striving to provide ALL Australian women with a known midwife who will be their primary carer throughout their pregnancy. (Have you sought the views of the Maternity Coalition on this subject?)

The title Midwife Practitioner should only be used by clinicians (holding an authority to practise midwifery) who can demonstrate they have cared for at least ten women throughout the continuum of their pregnancy during the past year. Midwives no longer offering primary care to women would have to forfeit this title and revert to using ‘midwife’ or “RN with an authority to practise midwifery” whenever such clinical status is not achieved.

There are other criteria to be achieved to gain credentialled status as deemed suitable by the College. Perhaps the Registrar of the College (or any Executive member) can inform the list of those criteria that are currently required?
