I too have been at a number of homebirths where baby had a true knot in the cord which was only discovered post birth and was just an interesting anecdote. We all noted that these were really luscious cords with a lot of jelly, so the knot didn't appear to make a difference. I think knowing before hand via an u/s for other reasons can be worrying though. We had one client in Seattle who went nearly 2 weeks postdates and wanted to be monitored with BPD's etc. So, she was and on the scan it showed the cord was looped 3 times around the neck. So, of course we monitored closely, all went well, she birthed standing with baby flying out into my hands, only had to unwind the baby before passing it to her, only a small tear with no sutures, lovely which would have been nicer not to have been concerned about that cord.   I am only guessing but I think if a knot is a problem then it will present with non-reassuring FHT's. I don't know if it is normal for it to be a problem just that it doesn't have to be. Or just another piece of information that was misinterpreted by confused parents! something was going on though because there was enough concern about the baby to have a very late c/s as she was needing to push on the way to theatre. I wasn't present during this her first birth so Im a bit hazy on the facts. Can you tell if a cord is knotted before birth? anyone know? how common is it and is it usually a problem?
