WOW Jan
When have you slept? I hope you have a break ahead of you now (besides all the postnatal support yet to be given). I am a midwife who works within the public health system in Alice Springs.  I hear all these great story's on this list from powerful midwives and sometimes I think I am not a shadow on them. I work as best as I can with women having their babies here. I spend a lot of time reflecting on the 'what if's'. Should I have spoken out more or contacted the consultant. I feel we have a good relationship with the doctors and we often advocate for the womans benefit.  In the end it's up to the individual midwife and where she is at this point in time as to what sort of a midwife we are. I have spoken to women who commend the care they recieved by the midwife when I know I would have done things differently. Ultimatley if the woman is happy with her birth experiance (even though she may be unaware of how different things might have been done) then that's what matters to me. I know you feel disappointed with the way some midwives perform but they may not be THERE yet! You should be proud that 4 of those women achieved the outcomes they wanted, and maybe the other 2 are happy with their experiance because you were there. This is not very succint but I think you're doing a great job.
