Hi,
I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but from my readings it would seem
that the most common medications are sulfasalazine, Asacol (active
ingredient being sulfasalazine) & to a lesser extent Prednisone, (see
http://www.ccfa.org/medcentral/library/family/drugpreg.htm) are the common
treatments for Ulcerative Colitis during pregnancy - however - I have read
of one woman taking 2000mg of fish oil supplements daily - with fantastic
results (sounds MUCH better for mum & bub than steroids!). Also check out
http://peruherbals.com/html/herbals.html &
http://www.alternativehealth.com.au/Product/catsclaw.htm regarding the use
of 'cats claw' (available in tablet form).
I know it's of absolutely no use to your client now, however, apparently
women who conceive during remission are highly likely to have symptom-free
pregnancies, whilst those who conceive during a flare-up have a really
difficult time - worth thinking about for baby # 2. (Of course this couldn't
have been predicted if she never presented with symptoms prior to
pregnancy.)
All the best, Veronyka
