My wife and I personally choose not to use a
dummy.
Our boy is 8 months and sometimes he sucks fingers,
but it is never for any duration and seems to be when his teeth are coming
through.
We spoke with our Midwife and she advised us that
there was nothing to worry about if he was sucking fingers or
thumb.
I also read on a website that the thumb sucking was
usually associated with "Breast" anxiety ( due to being weaned too early).
Whether or not this is true I don't know.
I haven't yet found any research that suggests
dental problems associated with thumb sucking.
