Hello All!!

Please get out the diaries and turn to mon the 14th of this month, on this wonderful day there is a planned protest to demonsrate anger over the lack of funding for deaf interpreters in SA.

For those that are not aware, up until June 30 the Deaf Soc. of SA funded all the deaf to have Auslan [australian sign langauge] interpreters; for appointments, intervies, weddings, funerals etc etc. However, as the Deaf Soc. is a charity as such it can no longer afford to fund this service.

The governemt were given due warning and requests were made that the governement take over the funding, approx $150,000 per year. At present, the gov pays for all non english speaking migrants to have interpreters, However in their wisdom they have refused to fund the deaf australian citizins, citing, amongst other reasons that aulsan is not a 'true and proper form of communcation'. mmmm.

We have done the petition thing to no avail so the protest is the next step, A group will be meeting at the deaf soc at 9.15 am [on south tce] and moving to amanda vandstone's office at 10 am then making way to parliament house!

if u have a free morning please come along. The deaf deserve to recieve the same access to serivices, employment etc as other hearing australians do!!

hope to see you there!
love Jess.
