hehe. the hospital I'm at doesnt use preceptors for
their students. They simply use the educators, who have too big a task on their
hands, and there are a lot of unhappy midwifery students not returning after the
course.
I've previously always worked in systems that use
the preceptor program, so I'm just trying to gather some current data to
put a case together to encourage them.
I understand entirely why you think you're
missing something. It's inconceivable to think of life without a personal helper
or two to get you through your course!

Pardon my ignorance, but what other method is there for midwife students
to gain clinical experience than preceptorship?
Since I can't think of any other methods, I can't think of how or why
research would be done to support or not support it.
I feel like I'm missing something :o)

Robin, are you after references in terms of research evidence or in
terms of what other hospitals are doing?
I'm a 2nd year Bachelor of Midwifery student @ VU in Melbourne.
I did my last set of clinical placements @ Werribee-Mercy hospital &
was most impressed with their preparation for us, which included an
extensive "manual" for us.
