At present I am the manager of a Women's Unit at Mackay Health Service District,(1000 birth per year) which includes a birth centre. I have a clinical background as a tertiary centre birth suite midwife (Townsville), homebirth midwife, (Townsville and Mackay, for 10 years) as well as a birth centre midwife. (Mackay) Also having worked in rural and remote settings eg Congress Alukura, (Alice Springs). Since taking over the position as the unit manager, the unit has undergone yet another period of extreme change. Prior to my commencement a decision was made to close team midwifery and reverted back to a traditional model of care. Following this, the HPPD system (a workforce measuring tool) of staffing was introduced. This period of change has been challenging and I am now seeking your assistance to identify contemporary models of care for the Unit, linked to this must be a relationship to HPPD. At present this unit offers a continuum of midwifery care for low risk women. I would like to improve the care for 'High risk,' minority/disadvantaged women. So I am seeking a program that is midwifery lead for these women. I will be attending the A.C.M.I 13TH Biennial National Conference in Darwin in September and would like to take this opportunity to network with other midwives, and unit managers.
