Beautifully: Information and workshops
for women and families will inform about birth choices after
caesarean.
With over a quarter of all women giving birth in Western Australia undergoing caesarean section, a day of information and workshops held by Birthrites: Healing After Caesarean Inc. promises to be a useful way to spend a Saturday for birthing families in Perth. To be held on Saturday September 13th, Birthing Beautifully will include a morning of information with speakers such as Dr. Chris Nichols, a local obstetrician, who will speak about breech birth and external cephalic version or turning a breech baby while still in utero - to enable an uncomplicated vaginal birth. Dr. Jennifer Fenwick, senior midwifery lecturer at Edith Cowan University, will teach how to read and interpret medical articles, and four complementary therapists will speak about homeopathy, acupuncture, kinesiology and synergenics for pregnancy and childbirth. The afternoon will be devoted to a series of three workshops entitled Planning a Positive Caesarean, Creating Your BirthSpace and Planning a Vaginal Birth After Caesarean, facilitated by Mary Murphy, SusanJane Morrison and Sally Westbury - all experienced midwives with the Community Midwifery Programme in Perth. Each workshop will be run three times, allowing delegates on the day to take part in all three. National Caesarean Awareness Day was inaugurated on September 11th, 2001 to promote awareness of the steadily rising caesarean rate in Australia, and the alternatives to caesarean for woman approaching subsequent births after caesarean. Birthrites: Healing After Caesarean Inc. is a local organisation which provides information and support to women who have had, or will have, a caesarean birth, and is also very active within the Western Australian childbirth community as lobbyists for worlds best practice childbirth services for WA women and their families. Birthing Beautifully is a part of Birthrites commitment to Western Australia to provide balanced, evidence based information to women, families and health care providers about caesarean section and the options available following a caesarean.
