This a really thought provoking question.  Unfortunately most midwives have only a theoretical knowlege and experience of this.  Working in the community with prolonged contact with women in the puerperium and even further, gives me a very good insight into these issues.  Unfortunately most women do not get this prolonged, confidence boosting contact and are the poorer for it.  I wish we had the ability to get the "continuity of carer" message across to the authorities who dole out the money for the various community programs which support women and new families.  Cheers.
