Birth pains

The local Mullumbimby doctor who described water birth as "nature's epidural" has clearly never had one (Letters, January 31-February 1).

Give me a break. It is like putting a sticking plaster on a severed limb.

I have had four labours - three with no pain relief (one a water birth), and a fourth with an epidural. While the recovery from drug-free labour is quicker, it is wrong to give women a false sense of security about the pain of childbirth.

Some women are lucky and have "manageable pain". For the rest of us, it is a matter of hoping the baby comes out before you have to ask for the drugs.

Cathy Sherry, Dooralong, February 1.
