Dear Jessica I have been visiting a woman recently who had an intrauterine death at term, in January this year. I also saw her antenatally when all was well and felt shocked, sad and 'guilty' that this baby had died unexpectantly. The hardest thing for her ( and me) was that no cause for the FDIU could be established. The 'why' question will remain forever.
She already has 6 kids and wants to have another but is very scared . She asks me lots of questions about what might happen next time, which I can't answer. I am loathe to 'discharge' this woman off my postnatal visiting list as no other services have been involved other than myself and her GP. Three months to continue visiting a postnatal woman is (for me) a long time, but for her a very short time indeed. I have given her references to SANDS but she has not contacted them. We have talked at length about the weeks, months, and years ahead, where the pain of this loss will remain as a chronic ache which will be worse at some times than others, but never go away. She has good support from her church and her religious beliefs have helped her through this difficult time. It has been a valuable learning experience for me - I have enjoyed learning from this wonderful sad mother. Hope these thoughts help you with your ongoing learning.
