two exciting, powerful programs for adolescent girls and boys that I'm also

The two programs that I invite you to consider are: 1. Pathways to Manhood - a 5 day wilderness program for 12-14 year old boys and their fathers. 2. Journey into Womanhood - an inspiring weekend workshop for mothers and their 9-12 year old daughters to educate, acknowledge and celebrate their changing girls. This is being held at The Centre, Randwick from Fri 30 Jul - Sun 1 Aug 2004. 1. Pathways to Manhood Since February this year, I have been a facilitator for the Mothers' part of this program - the mothers are integral to the success of this program and are very involved in the Leaving Day (where the boys and their fathers leave to go camping for 5 days) and the Welcome Home Day (where the mothers and the rest of the boys' families gather together for a lunchtime celebration feast to welcome home the fathers and the young men from their time away). The mothers also attend a special evening together in order to honour their sons while their men are away on camp.

2. Journey into Womanhood This program is a weekend workshop for mothers and their 9-12 year old daughters to share together - something that is not currently offered in Sydney as far as we're aware. The three facilitators - Shushann Movsessian, Alexandra Pope, and myself were individually working in the areas of puberty education, menstrual health and support for mothers. Through our separate work, we came to realise that mothers and daughters want and need to explore this important transition together. So we decided to combine our skills and resources to offer this. We are experienced facilitators and psychotherapists and work in a supportive, gentle and respectful way.
On Tuesday 11 May 2004, Oprah Winfrey�s show was about teenage daughters, what they are getting up to and what they need from their parents. Oprah says �what they want is NOT JUST the time spent together�it is time knowing that somebody thinks they are special and important � that the time spent together meant something to them and the other person�validation is the common thread.� We want to offer this weekend opportunity for mothers to validate and honour their daughters, as well as educate them about their changing bodies, minds and spirit. Two of the facilitators, Alexandra and Shushann, have recently been quoted and offered as resources in �Becoming a Woman: Where has my little girl gone?� Sydney�s Child, April 2004 p23-25.
