Hi Denise
From the NZ Homebirth List.....
Home birth numbers aren't kept, but we do know 53,037
babies were born 'in' hospital in 2002 and the total number of
live births registered in 2002 up to December was 54,021. That
would give us a rough 'out' of hospital birth rate of a little
under 2% in 2002, unfortunately we don't know how many are
planned homebirths and how many are BBA's or accidental home
births. From the below article it would appear the birth rate
has gone up, we will not have figures for the amount of hospital
births (to then subtract the difference and work out the 'out'
of hospital birth rate) until next year or the following most
likely.
One difference I see (well there's many....) but NZ as many
primary
birthing units which is like a 'middle ground' between hospital
and home.
A lot of women are choosing to birth in these units. They
do not have
GPs or obstetricians or anaesthetists, just run by
midwives. Nitrous
Oxide is the only pain relief available (and water, birthing
pools etc).
It's a fantastic option. I think that these units must
impact on the homebirth
statistics.
Hope this helps,
Kiwi Kim.
