Tania,

Have a friend that is a B-Midder and she is heavily involved with the Monash IVF, I passed your question on to her and this was her reply.  Hope this helps.

Rita - Deliverywoman

"unsure of whether she'll be able to undergo the procedure when she's breastfeeding.

YES, YOU CAN UNDERGO WHILST BREASTFEEDING, SO LONG AS YOUR CYCLE HAS RETURNED…… IT’S BASICALLY A PAP-SMEAR-LIKE PROCEDURE, WHERE THEY JUST POP THE EMBRYOS INTO THE UTERUS A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER OVULATION (DEPENDING ON AGE OF EMBRYOS WHEN THEY WERE FROZEN – EG. IF THEY ARE BLASTOCYST, THEN THEY’LL BE PUT IN 5 DAYS AFTER YOU OVULATE). THEN YOU JUST GO HOME AND WAIT TWO WEEKS TO SEE IF YOUR PERIOD ARRIVES OR IF YOU ARE PREGNANT.

Will she need hormonal preparation, given that there will be no egg harvesting?

NO, NO HORMONES ARE USED, PROVIDED YOU HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH REGULAR CYCLE AND HORMONE LEVELS. YOUR CYCLE WILL BE TRACKED VIA ULTRASOUND AND BLOOD TESTS.

Does she need to have resumed menstruating?

YES

Will she need hormonal injections to help maintain the pregnancy, and if so, is this contraindicated with breastfeeding?

DEPENDS ON THE CLINICIAN – SOME WOMEN USE PROGESTERONE, SOME USE NOTHING.  NEGOTIATE!  CANNOT IMAGINE IT WOULD BE ANY DIFFERENT TO A NORMAL BREASTFEEDING MUM TRYING TO CONCEIVE. DON’T KNOW ABOUT CONTRAINDICATIONS, BUT WOULD PROBABLY BE WISE TO NOT TAKE ANYTHING. CHECK WITH CLINICIAN.
