Word-free
picture pack for teaching breastfeeding when communication is difficult /smaller>/fontfamily>
A
new pack launched today will help overcome communication barriers when
teaching new mothers about breastfeeding./smaller>/fontfamily>
The
Breastfeeding Teaching Pack is a teaching aid for use with parents who have
learning difficulties or who cannot read well, for those who speak a different
language from the person providing help and support, or where there are other
communication barriers between helpers and
mothers./smaller>/fontfamily>
The
pack, jointly produced by Family Care and the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly
Initiative, covers the basics of how to breastfeed, how to express and store
breastmilk, and care practices which help make breastfeeding successful. /smaller>/fontfamily>
The
difference from many other teaching aids is that all information for parents
is provided in a purely pictorial format - without any words - in manageable,
easy to follow
sequences./smaller>/fontfamily>

The parents'
information pages are accompanied by a Helper's Guide containing information
and guidance on what each of the pictures represents. The pictures may be
copied to leave with parents as a reminder, for example. They are also
included on a CD which is provided with the
pack./smaller>/fontfamily>
The
pack is divided into the following sections, each easily distinguishable by a
colour-coded tab:/smaller>/fontfamily>
• Sleeping/smaller>/fontfamily> • Skin to skin/smaller>/fontfamily>
• Rooting/smaller>/fontfamily>
• Preparing to feed/smaller>/fontfamily> •
Positioning/smaller>/fontfamily>
•
Attaching/smaller>/fontfamily> • Feeding/smaller>/fontfamily> • Expressing/smaller>/fontfamily> •
Helping the milk to flow/smaller>/fontfamily> •
Sterilising/smaller>/fontfamily>
• Storage/smaller>/fontfamily>
The Breastfeeding Teaching Pack
builds upon the experience of the two organisations - Family Care's in
providing teaching packs for use where communication is difficult, and
UNICEF's in working to improve breastfeeding support in the NHS./smaller>/fontfamily>
The
pack is available priced £50.00 from the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative.
