If we documented all the cases of maternal & infant damage which occur in Australian Hospitals annually they would obscure this page totally.
We never hear about most as they settle out of court.
Sometimes babies die, that is a fact of life.

Fear is a dreadful thing, it paralyses consumers, is that really what the Med profession want.? Paralysed, mute women ?
They ought to have all become anaesthetists !!

If all tragedies are avoidable why are babies still being born damaged within the hospital system ?

Birthing zealots stoke the anti-doctor cause

September 29, 2005

Rather than being a threat, medical care saves lives, writes Miranda Devine.

As the NSW Government embarks on the "de-institutionalisation" of
childbirth, the holy grail of the Mother Nature set, home birth is also on
the agenda, with trials under way, to the horror of obstetricians such as
Mourik.

He cites "homebirth disasters" from a list of 12 he put together as a
warning for the Federal Government including:

- A 38-year-old woman settled for $7.5million after her large
(4.5-kilogram) baby was stillborn after a homebirth undertaken when the
child was known to be in the breech (bottom- or feet-first) position. The
death was "avoidable";

- A 38-year-old woman, transferred to hospital after a 24-hour labour at
home with her first child, underwent an emergency caesarean after foetal
heartbeat monitoring showed the baby under "severe" stress. The baby was
born with brain damage and died three months later. Mourik claims the
tragedy was "avoidable with earlier transfer";

- A 34-year-old woman with her first child, overdue at 43 weeks, had a long
labour at home before arriving at hospital with a "fresh stillbirth".
Mourik claims this was "totally avoidable with induction and monitoring in
labour".

Medicalisation is not the enemy, but merely a tool to save lives.
