Dear LIsters,

A few weeks ago I heard that Tricia Anderson, known to many of you as a wonderful midwife from Bournemouth University, MIDIRS, The Practising Midwife etc has a brain stem tumour, and has only a short time to live.

Tricia was in Australia for the ICM in July and it was during her time here that she first began to feel unwell. After some exploratory tests the tumour was discovered and despite chemotherapy and radiotherapy, there is little that can be done. The news has come as a terrible shock to those who knew her. She has written widely, was a very popular speaker and workshop presenter, an independently practising midwife, University lecturer, Editor etc etc. She was a presenter at the Birth International Conference in the UK last April and I have worked with her before several times. Her plight only came to my attention when I approached her to join us at the next UK Conference.

The following message is being circulated and I have posted it to the ozmidwifery so that the message spreads across Australia. Tricia has many friends here and they may want to contribute. Our thoughts are very much with her during this terrible ordeal.

Regards

Andrea

Subject: A Quilt for Tricia

Please DO NOT forward this email to either the ARM / UK Midwifery list or the IMA list, as this is meant to be a surprise, and doing so would spoil it!

Hello!

I hope you will forgive the opening of this email, the reasons for which will become clear very soon!

As you may know, Tricia Anderson has a brain stem tumour and is very in need of love and happy energy from all of her friends at the moment. She is going to be having a healing day in mid-February, and, as we know that she has many friends who would like to be with her in spirit and let her know they are thinking of her, we are inviting you to mail us a message for Trisha which we will put into a special album and / or join us in contributing to a quilt that we are making for her.

We are planning to put all the messages we receive into photo albums, so it would be great if you could write Trish a message (or draw a picture or do whatever else you feel inspired to do!) on one side of a postcard-sized (i.e. about 3 x 5 inches) piece of paper or card, and leave the other side blank. If you would like to send fabric for her quilt as well, it would be great if you could attach a small piece of the same fabric to the “message” side of the postcard, or perhaps put a drawing or photo of the fabric / square on the postcard, so that she will be able to see who sent which piece of fabric.

If you would like to send fabric, we would ideally like cotton or something of similar weight, which will be easy to sew together with all the other pieces. You are welcome to simply send a piece of fabric, or to make an actual quilt square and use embroidery / patchwork / appliqué / anything else that takes your fancy. The final quilt will have squares that are 10cm x 10cm (mainly because we thought this would be funny, as so many midwives will be represented in the quilt!) so please make sure that the fabric you send is at least 12cm by 12cm to allow for seams, and, if your square contains any embroidery or other embellishment, please make sure that the area that this covers is no more than 10cm square and leave us a seam allowance of at least a centimetre on each edge.

We need all messages / fabric / squares to be with us as soon as possible, and by 15th February at the latest. We realise this is a short time-scale, but we also know that the kind of busy folk who will want to be involved with this are well able to pull out the stops when necessary!

Please send all fabric and messages to:

Jane Evans

90 Cravells Road

Harpenden

Hertfordshire

AL5 1BG

ENGLAND

(For info, it takes up to five days for a letter to get to the UK from elsewhere in the EU, about a week to get from the US to the UK, and a week to ten days from anywhere else in the world, including Australia and NZ).

You are welcome to forward this to anybody else you know who you think may like to participate, as we would like this invitation circulated as widely as possible. As above, please do not forward this to the ARM / UK Midwifery or IMA lists, as Trish reads those lists.

Thanks, love and best wishes,

Sara Wickham and Jane Evans
