Hi Tanya!
Try to avoid the temptation of a good strong coffee to keep you awake during the last few hours of your shift...otherwise you won't sleep when you get home.

If you're sleepy on the way home open the window, turn the heater off, and generally try and make yourslef as uncomfortable as possible...it helps if you have a full bladder LOL! If you're still sleepy, do as others have suggested and pull off the road for a power nap. Make sure you lock all the doors and hide your handbag though.

Also, I find that i can't sleep straight away when I get home if my mind is racing (especially after labour ward shifts!) so I try and do something to relax when I get home...read a few pages of an undemanding book, listen to some music, go for a short walk etc.

Good luck...

Kylie

Hi all,

I am a newly graduated Midwife, who has her first lot of night shift (5 shifts) coming up.

Does anyone have a tips for me? How to sleep best during the day, how to stay awake and alert during the night?

  Thanks
