What I meant was the sp wont open any files within any sites of the site ("web
application")Its all default and I havnt even got round to configuring anything as I cant get sp designer to work. Its using standard AD auth. Explorer view and multiple upload work correctly. Are you using standard out-of-the-box AD Authentication? If you have switched the site to say use Forms Auth then you can't connect to it with SharePoint Designer.
