Update: Yippe - a solution to this!!!

There was nothing as fancy as a group policy doing this (I searched my
registry without luck, but beware that the Word 2003 file location runs
home to C:\Documents and Settings\CurrentUser\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates even without a setting).

It turns out this is a known Microsoft Word bug in Office 2003 SP2.
Upgrading to SP3 (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en
) has fixed on mine and another dev machine - so just need to see how/if I
can get it fully tested and rolled out.

       <snip>
A document that is created from a template in a Web location is
unexpectedly attached to a template in the Temporary Internet
          Files folder

Consider the following scenario. You have a custom template that
is located in a Web location. You create a document that is based
on the template. You save the document and then close the
document. When you open the document and then click Templates and
Add-Ins on the Tools menu, the document template that is attached
to the document is not the template in the Web location. Instead,
the template that is attached to the document is located in the
Temporary Internet Files folder on the computer. Additionally,
customizations that are contained in the custom template in the
Web location are not available in the document.
       </snip>

It's nice to cross something off the list. Thanks for the suggestions. Kind
regards, Mike.

Excellent - a lead to follow!

Could well be - unfortunately I'm new to the setup here so I'll have to
ask
around.

Many thanks, Mike.

Hi,

Is there some group policy or something like that set in your
environment? We had our infrastructure people add a similar policy here
that cause something similar to happen.

Subject: Attached Document Template reference changes to Temporary
Internet Files

A belated Happy New Year to the list!.

A little help though please, as I've not looked into document templates
much before and they are causing me grief!

I've got a standard doc library with versioning, 'require checkout for
edit' and a single custom content type (with a custom approvals workflow
and an uploaded word 2003 dot template).

Clicking New, Saving back to the document library, Checking In and
Approving the document all work fine.

Before and after saving and checking in, if I look in the MS Word 2003
menu
Tools-> Templates and Add-Ins, I correctly see:
http://myServer:8888/mySite/_cts/My%20Document%20Type/MyDocument.dot

BUT......

When I edit in Word again (it gets checked out by default) and look at
Templates and Add-Ins, I now see: C:\Documents and Settings\me\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSO\D8A17878.dot

If another user looks at the document they also see this same but
obviously
wrong local reference...

I can manaully click Attatch and put the correct dot reference, and all
is
fine from then on, but I can't expect end users to remember do this.

Any ideas how I fix this? It is required as there are macros that
disappear
when that dot reference gets changed.

I friend tried this out on his own SP environment, and failed to
reproduce
it, so I'm thinking there is some setting for Word, or Sharepoint, that
is
causing this behaviour for our users.

Many thanks, Mike
