Although I havent a web part using the ListViewByQuery control the code is quite complete. I believe the control handles the data formatting automatically, e.g displaying the hyperlink values, lookup values etc.
I've coded cross site listview by using a SPGridview but this requires manually formatting the data to be correctly display the values. Q: Why are you looking at coding a cross site list view? You could achieve the same by using a dataview web part in SharePoint Designer. No code necessary and hook it up within 10mins.
