I think SP needs all its placeholder's somewhere on the page just to be able to render the page, don't they? I recall if you remove required placeholders, the page won't compile. Is there a certain set of placeholders that are required and some that are optional? PlaceHolderPageDescription I imagine would be optional?

I would ghost the master page (or use a custom one).
