Run SQL Profiler and see what's is querying from SQL Server.

Maybe there are SQL locks that don't return your results and you get the
Request Timeout (I would expect that you are using SQL Server 2005, right?!)

Subject: Application error when access
/_layouts/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx, Error=Request timed out

Hi Guys;

  I got this error when trying to modifying a Navigation setting for a site,
but get this error
"Application error when access /_layouts/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx,
Error=Request timed out".

  It works fine for any other site. Has anyone seen this problem before? or
if there is stsadm functions or code I can modify navigation on the back
end?

Cheers

Ken
