If you go to Advanced Permissions on a list and set Edit Access to Only Their Own, you will receive the above error when trying to add an alert. I'm really not sure why this should be the case, as we often want site admins alerted to changes on various lists.
What's more, if you had existing alerts on the list and then apply this setting, the alerts will be deleted. Has anyone found a solution to this problem that doesn't involve a workflow? Kind regards, Paul
