Excellent post!!

Remember that opening up ports through a firewall is really for very specific 
scenarios.

Generally you would only allow HTTP traffic to your SharePoint sites.  It is 
much safer to have a dedicated private LAN/WAN or VPN to allow intra-farm 
communications.  This article explains how to provide external access without 
the need to expose SharePoint directly:
