More info - if you installed WSS3 on a box without SQL on there, you probably
already have WID available locally. Just remember it is internal to that server
and you don't want to go messing with it as can perform other features beyond
WSS (AD Rights Management, System Resource Manager, UDDI Services ...).

Uzma, ping me an email if you want to know anything else.

Forgot to say WID is 32bit, so a little down on performance if you have
requirements there.

I know Metalogix and AvePoint are often too heavy for many clients. Therefore
you could also consider AvePoints free EBS provider for SQL2005 - I've not used
it so can't give an opinion I'm sorry.

I think that covers it all!

On a wdier note, I'm with Paul on ECM/DMS systems - SP can be used in many of
the ECM roles, and many of it's competitors are laggards technically, but SP
still has a way to go in understanding/delivering on enterprise document
requirements.

All BLOBs do is decouple data from binary streams. Now if they all used CMIS
for their document management and discovery, whole new opportunities would open
up...

What about SQL2005 embedded (Windows Internal DB/WYukon) rathern than express
- no limit AFAIK if you have the right Server (2008) and you have it on the
same box as wss3 - it is free with unlimited storage.

Also, Express 2008 now comes with a 10GB limit - so RBS may not be needed.

And Free EBS (deprecated, but still used widely) providers are out there if you
must stay on SQL 2005.

However, better off to move to a newer platform if possible, and RBS can get
you ouf of an specific DB size issue as long as you plan your backups well and
understand its limitations.

Not a lot of people seem to know all this, which is strange!

Mike.

Hi Tom,

I don't think the Client wants to go down the path of a new server/build. I
will need to set up a testing envrionment to ensure that SQL 2005 Express can
be upgraded to SQL 2008 Express seamlessly! (If you guys have any links/tips,
let me know!)

Uzma,

Why not upgrade to SharePoint Foundation and use remote blob storage?

Then your database will not be so big etc.

Hi there,

I was wondering.. is it possible to create a new content database to generate a
further 4GB of space within a stand alone, WSS 3.0 environment with SQL Express
installed?
