Change your local workspace mappings so that you are working on the root of an
external drive - you might be able to claim back a few characters to get it
done. Developers can then use alternate workspace mappings as well.

It is all down to local file system limitations.

Subject: Getting Error TF10176 in TFS 2005

We are still working in TFS 2005 and I need to be able to branch a project from
a particular changeset. The only problem is we have some files in our projects
with guids in the names and because of this TFS keeps throwing me this error:

TF10176: The path for 'project path' exceeded the limit of 248 characters for a
directory, or 260 for a directory and file name.

Then it lists all of the offending files with their paths.

Because of this, the attempt to branch into a new empty TFS project fails. It
seems ironic that developers can check these files in but I can't really do
anything in terms of a branch with them. Does anybody know of a way to get
around this ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
