Indeed - you can either upgrade from TFS 2005 or 2008 in-place (assuming you
also upgrade the prerequisites) or copy the seven databases to new hardware and
point the configuration at it which will start the upgrade process. Really
handy...

TFS 2005 & TFS 2008 include a limited license for SQL 2005 Standard.
TFS 2010 includes a limited license for SQL 2008 Standard.

TFS2010 has SQL2008 as a pre-requisite.  It won't run on SQL2005.

Also, you can do an upgrade (apparently) from TFS20005 straight to TFS2010,
though I haven't tried it.

No only SQL05

Not sure of the 2010 story though...

I though SQL 2008 was included in the licensing.

Subject: TFS 2005 -> TFS 2008 Migration

Hi All,

I was running some test migration / disaster recovery scenarios over the
weekend with mixed results.

(TFS05 -> TFSMigrate -> TFS08)

I have and TFS05 server and successfully "moved to different hardware"

I then ran an in place upgrade on the new hardware to TFS08 which was also
successful.

I then tried to "move to different hardware" which failed.

I soon discovered that TFS05 runs SPS2.0 and the in place upgrade leaves it
with SPS2.0

The new TFS08 box has SPS3.0. So I in place upgraded the migrated box to
SPS3.0 and was successful.

I tried again to "moved to different hardware" which failed again.

I found the docs somewhat frustrating but am confident I followed processes -
taking into consideration the comments that corrected errors.

I guess I was happy with the in place upgrading, but I am concerned that "IF" I
need to move again I won't be able to, and further more when TFS2010 ships will
I be able to upgrade my previously upgraded tfs install.

I have left SQL server at 2005 because of licensing.

Any thoughts?

Alastair
