Steven - Yes, this works with a TFS2008 data tier, as long as the SQL server is upgraded to SQL2008 SP1 as well. Instead of choosing 'AT Only' install, you choose 'Upgrade' and point it at the existing TFS2008 databases. To upgrade from Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server or Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server 1. In Team Foundation Server Configuration tool, click Upgrade and then click Start Wizard. The Team Foundation Server Upgrade Configuration wizard appears. 2. Read the Welcome screen, and then click Next. 3. Type the name of the SQL Server instance that hosts the data from an earlier version of Team Foundation Server, and click List Available Databases.
Also, if anybody has already download TFS2010 media, I recommend you discard it and re-download the updated media. MSDN subscriber downloads<http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/downloads> or TFS trial from microsoft.com<http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=186901> Here's why: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2010/08/05/update-on-the-tfs-upgrade-fix.aspx Then you may also want to install the QFE rollup which addresses all the known issues that we've found since releasing: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2010/07/27/tfs-2010-updates-coming-to-a-download-site-near-you.aspx Grant From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steven Nagy Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 3:02 PM To: ozTFS Subject: RE: Advice on restoring TFS 2008 Grant, will this work pointing it at a TFS2008 data tier? In TFS2010, you can just run the TFS installer and then choose the 'Application Tier Only (AT Only)' configuration. That lets you point at a SQL server and then everything just works. I can't comment on what was right or wrong about this process but here's what I did: 1. Backup that data tier before anything else. Test the backups as a restore to another database somewhere. Ensure they work 100%. Then make triple copies of the backups on different servers. :) 2. Blow away your data tier -> delete all non system databases 3. Create a new VM for your App Tier -> make sure it has exactly the same machine name 4. Install TFS on your new App Tier and cleaned data tier 5. Create new projects in TFS matching the names of your old projects -> Case sensitivity is important 6. Backup the new data tier with the newly created projects just for kicks (will make things faster if you need to roll back and try something different) 7. Restore the old data tier over the top of the new one. 8. Pray to your deity of choice The reason for creating the new projects is to get Sharepoint configured correctly. After this process users will probably have to recreate their workspaces, etc. Let me know how you go. You pretty much need to completely reinstall TFS. It is very painful. Depending how familiar you are with installing TFS, you may want to open a Support call. I have since discovered that there were no backups being done. Luckily, our data tier server is unaffected. Can anyone point me to instructions on how to install a new instance of TFS and link it back up to our database? Or, am I better off opening a support call with Microsoft. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.
