That also leads one back to the REAL problem, of why the hell do

everyone want to display their data in datagrids. Its boring,

unimaginative and torturous trying to make one control do

*everything*. So over used.

 

It seems that our brains seem to like "tabular data". When the cryptic
Linear B <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_B>  Mycenaean script was
translated in the 1950s, one of the best samples of the language was a large
tablet with rows and columns of symbols. It turned out to be a "spreadsheet"
with totals at the bottom. Due to constraints imposed by technology, our
brains and the dimensions of the Universe it seems that 2 dimensional sheets
are about as much as we can handle.

 

I think trees are also a very friendly and natural way of presenting
hierarchical data (as long as they're not too long and deep).
