Hammer uses alot of resources while compiling which might give the ilusion
that it crashed.

I recomend that you do not use your computer while compiling, and just
leave and do something else in the mean time. If the map is properly made
it should take only 5 minutes, 10 minutes tops if it is really big. Maybe
20 for the final, expert compiling. However, even if it is compiling and
you minimize it it will freeze, but it is stil compiling. It will take a
bit longer than usual due to you taking some resources somewhere else to
say firefox, but it is still compiling.

If you alt tab and not minimize hammer, it will be slightly faster than
minimizing, and it can still freeze and stop responding, but again it is
compiling. Just give it time.

What I usually do, is I start the compiling process and then I will browse
the internet for a while. I can see that hammer is frozen and not
responding, but after 5 or 10 minutes it will finish compiling.

if you force the compiling process to close, ie vbsp.exe or vvis.exe, you
might have to close all od the SDK and restart hammer, because the
compiling programs did not close correctly. Sometimes, you even need to
restart the whole computer to start working again properly. Specially with
older versions of the SDK. I think it is nice to note that Portal 2?s SDK
is actually quite better, and I am able to close the compiling dialog mid
compiling if I notice a leak error. Then I see the pointfile, seal the leak
error and compile again with no problems.

So I suggest that if you HAVE to stop the compiling process just close the
window instead of opening task manager. I repeate, this only works (at
least for me) on Portal 2 (I can't remember if it works okay with L4D2,
defintely not with Orange Box SDK and older).

TL:DR I ran across a hallway and there was a creepy little girl. She raised
her hand and I immediatly ran away. I almost shat my pants out of fear.
Never again
